Chapter Twenty nine

There were boxes scattered here and there in her living room. Deciding what to take with her and what to leave behind was a difficult process.  She had decided to keep the house. It was her parents house, after all.  She wasn’t ready to give it up and Alex really seemed fine with it.  At least, he didn’t act like he thought she was keeping it in case things didn’t work out.  It had crossed her mind, but her heart was completely Alex’s and she couldn’t imagine being without him.  He made her believe he felt the same.  She was so happy. She’d just finished closing up a box with masking tape as he walked in.
“You have lots of stuff,” he teased her.
“This is nothing, handsome. I’m leaving half of it here.”
He walked up behind her and put his arms around her waist. She leaned back against him and sighed.
“You sad?”
“Sad? No, I’m happy.”
“I would understand if you sad. You leaving your home and friends behind.”
She turned to face him and wrapped her hands around his neck.
“I am happier than I have ever been, Alexander Ovechkin. I have a new world waiting for me and there is no one I’d rather share it with.”
She stood on her tip toes and kissed his soft lips.  He wrapped his hands in her soft hair and held her close.
“We could stop for little bit and go back to your room,” he tempted her, nuzzling her neck.
“Can’t you wait until we get home?” she smiled.
“Home. I like this. Okay, wait for home,” he slapped her lightly on the pockets of her new Ovi jeans.  “I park truck up the street. You move Mustang out of drive?”
She nodded and squeezed his hand before he moved out the door.

Sophie picked up the box and moved it to the kitchen table, smiling to herself. She turned to get her keys off the hook on the wall and froze.  He was standing in the doorway, grinning with a smile that didn’t reach his eyes.
“So, what’s going on here?” Dave asked, lifting an eyebrow.
Sophie backed slowly toward the doorway to the living room, panic rising in her throat making her unable to speak.
“Packing?  Where do you think you’re going, Sophie?” he sneered.
She made a break for the front door. He chased after her, shoving her from behind into the door itself.  She crumpled and he pinned her to the door.
“You’re not going anywhere,” he hissed in her ear. “You think you can just leave and start a whole new life somewhere else, with someone else? That’s not gonna happen, Sweetheart. You’re mine – always have been, always will be.”
Sophie forced herself to get her breathing under control. She was close to hyperventilating. If that happened, she could pass out. She couldn’t let that happen. She wouldn’t make it that easy for him.  She swallowed hard and braced her hands against the door.  She took a deep breath and brought her foot down hard on Dave’s.  She tagged him right at the base of the ankle. His grasp on her let up in his surprise and she pushed hard against the door, knocking him off balance. She slammed her hand against the panic button on the alarm pad and fumbled with the door. In her panic, she didn’t realize that it was locked and before she could get it open Dave was on her again.  She tried to fight him off, but his right connected with her jaw first and she slumped to the floor. She was dazed for a moment and barely registered another voice.
She fought the fog from her head and saw that Alex had Dave pinned to the floor.  Dave had his hands around Alex’s throat, but Alex continued to pummel him with his right hand.  Dave was shorter than Alex, but somehow he was holding his own against him. Sophie could hear Alex growling in Russian as she tried to get to her feet.  The alarm was wailing throughout the house. She could hear the distant sound of the phone ringing.  She stumbled toward the table to the phone.  Dave’s eyes shot toward her and he flashed his hand out to grab her ankle. Alex was momentarily distracted by Sophie’s fall and Dave flipped him over onto his back. Dave landed two solid punches to Alex’s jaw, then wrapped his hands around Alex’s neck.  Sophie regained her feet and ran into the kitchen.  She grabbed the bat she kept in the corner - the bat with Dave’s name on it.  She ran back to the living room. Alex was still punching at Dave, but his eyes were slightly bigger and his lips were turning blue.  Sophie raised the bat over her head and brought it down across Dave’s shoulders before he even registered that she was there. He collapsed on top of Alex and she heard Alex take in a deep breath.  Alex pushed Dave’s unconscious body off of him and reached for Sophie. She was trembling and the fog was starting to come back. She didn’t have the strength to hold the bat anymore. Alex caught her before she fell and held her until the swimming in her head subsided. Just then, two uniformed police officers burst through the front door.
“It’s over, Sophia,” he whispered to her, rocking her in his arms.  She clung to him as tight as she could.  Over, she thought. Finally over.
